Robert A. Brown, founder and President of FACT, studied biology
at Harvard and Northwestern. He did research in biology at Woods Hole, MA, at
Fort Detrick, MD, and at the Institute for Research in Animal Behavior in New
York City. He then joined the curatorial staff of the Bronx Zoo after which he
was Managing Director of The Anti-Cruelty Society, an animal shelter and
veterinary clinic in Chicago. He founded FACT in 1982 because there was no
organization devoted exclusively to improving the welfare of farm animals during
their lives confined to factory farms. Mr. Brown now lives in Stonington, CT
where his duties for FACT include fund raising and long-range planning.
Richard Wood, FACT's Executive Director, provides leadership
and direction to FACT's programs. Prior to joining FACT, Mr. Wood was a
consultant to advocacy organizations including the Citizens Organizing Project,
which addresses coalmining abuses affecting farmland and the environment. He
served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, working
with farmers on sustainable agriculture policies and practices; and Illinois
IMPACT, an ecumenical public policy program that addressed poverty, criminal
justice, and land use issues. Mr. Wood received both Masters in Theology and
Doctor of Ministry degrees from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.
